Phil Anselmo / Warbeast - War of the Gargantuas

(CD Album Review)

***

The Almighty Anselmo goes head to head with his label prodigies!!!

Released under Phil Anselmo's own label Housecore Records this a four track CD with two tracks from Warbeast. A band signed to the label and a band Phil Anselmo has been shouting to anyone who would listen about. They have toured with Down and he is regularly pictured in one of their t-shirts. The reason most people will buy this though is two solo tracks from the man himself. Whether they are an indicator of his debut wolo album which is due this year or if they are tracks from his vault remain to be seen.

The two tracks from Phil are.... well there's fast heavy shredding guitars with fast drums with Phil screaming his guts out over the top. Exactly what you wanted! the songs are raw, primitive sounding. Delivered in a Hardcore style if they have anything in common with any of his previous work it's mostly in the vein of Superjoint Ritual. If this is an indicator of his solo album then it looks to be the most extreme solo album from a mainstream Rock artist ever. Philip H. Anselmo and the Illegals are well worth listening to because they hit a punch like Phil did with Pantera back in the 90's.

The real treat here in all fairness is actually Warbeast's tracks and the second track'Itis really the best on the whole EP. Warbeast are the darker side of Thrash. I wouldn't go so far as to call them Death Metal but they really remind me of Obituary. They quite simply kick ass. This is an awesome introduction to them and their debut 'Krush the Enemy' is well worth checking out.

All in all in four tracks at the end of the day. Good ones granted. But it a collection completion piece. A worthy purchase but not one you need to rush out for.
