'The one and only' Nik Kershaw

Nik Kershaw ***** Having been born in Bristol this was a homecoming of sorts for Nik Kershaw now looking splendid with his white hair and growing older gracefully while still entertaining with his plethora of hits from the 80’s. ‘Dancing Girls’ got an early showing to remind up quite what a back catalogue it is, songs that having been released three decades ago are still instantly recognisible.

With Nik Kershaw centre stage and most of the audience mid-thirties and upwards , you realise what a civilized festival Lets Rock is, it had a really nice feel about the day where you could just take it in without being jostled or rushed. A lot of the crowd even had beach style tents around the edge A perfect summers days to hear the hits, which by the way kept coming from the stage with ‘The Riddle’ soon getting an airing.

Perhaps his biggest known hit ‘Wouldn't it be Good’ came soon after and got everybody on their feet and joining in. A lot of crowd also seem to have these revelation moments, not just with Nik but all the acts, where it clicks who did what song. I heard of number of “oh yeah he did this one” or similar throughout the day. It’s not surprising that a talented songwriter has so many songs that are so fondly remembered.

In that vein, perhaps the one that caught a few people out was ‘I am the one and only’ which of course was sung by Chesney Hawkes but written by Nik Kershaw. Therefore well worth an outing and yet another sing along ensues, not even the last of his set with 'I won't let the sun go down on Me’ closing his triumphant set. Yet another outstanding performance on what was continuing to be a great day of varied but equally entertaining music.
