Nicki French - Steal the Crown

(CD Single Review)

***1/2

Will she steal Donna Summer's crown?

One of the most loveliest ladies in Pop Nicki French makes a return (and in perfect timing with the forthcoming Royal nuptials) with the infectious, Disco tantalised 'Steal the Crown'. Nicki French has been created Pop classics for decades now, with her Worldwide hit 'Total eclipse of the Heart' which charted across the World in 1995 becoming a top five smash hit in the UK, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Hong Kong, Japan, Spain and USA.

Nicki French has continued to make music, only recently joining Mike Stock (Stock, Aitken, Waterman) once again on 'This Love'. Nicki has however returned back to her roots as she returned back to her old stable mates at Energise Records (who’s recent success has included Sinitta, Hazell Dean, Suzanne Dee and Sean Smith) for what is shaping up to be a top class partnership. The second single from her forthcoming new album with Energise. 'Steal the crown' is something kind of special, and is the kind of record best suited for our HRH Nicki mixing together nicely all the NRG ingredients with a fusion of Disco.

The intro,  “Look at her the way she hangs off him like an ornament” has familiarities to Martine McCutcheon’s fabulous version of the Donna Summer classic 'On the Radio' before it stumps into a foot tapping, belting chorus, with lyrics including “Knock her off her thrown” and “Knock her heiress down” Nicki French means business as the sassy harmonies take stepping back in moments to Disco classic 'The Boss', which Nicki sure is, she really means business.

“Underneath the Princess that she’s playing is an evil Queen, happy knowing that the king is playing when they hit the scene” with lines like this it’s not so difficult to see how Nicki continues to attract a huge Gay following across the globe with tongue and cheek lyrics such as this we can all interpret this as we see fit (We all know a Queen on the scene). With this track a stand above the rest with its sublime production and a video which Nicki portrays brilliantly (the final clip of her sweeping away truly does show the warm and humorous personality this wonderful lady has). For me Nicki doesn’t need to steal no crown as she is deserving of royal statues for being the Queen of NRG and together with Energise truly has become the jewel in their crown.
