GraVil - Will in the future turn their competition to dust!!!

August 13th and 17th 2014
Milton Keynes, Craufurd Arms / London, Camden Underworld, UK

***1/2

Interesting Metal prospect for the future!!!

GraVil ***1/2 have been making waves on the Metal scene for the last few years, climaxing with a headline performance on the Boardie Takeover stage at this years Download festival and landing them an opening act place on the Hellyeah! tour. The contrast of the two concerts I got to see where very different. I think in Milton Keynes the choice of having a policy of re-admittance to the venue, which they had to do because in the part where the stage is their is no bar, really effected the support bands who had a very poor attendance watching them with everyone coming in to just watch Hellyeah!.

Then again the venue got extremely hot so if people had to survive the gig without a drink, I think their would have been a lot of unhappy customers indeed, but I was a bit annoyed by the fans of Hellyeah! to not give the support bands a try was a very bad move because both GraVil and Protafield were really good and well worth an hour of their time. In London though the Underworld was packed for all bands performing, so gave GraVil a chance to perform to their best and feed off the audience. I think GraVil are a band that really need an audience, because they are an in the face Metal band, that also use futuristic sounds to bring off what they do.

From opening number 'Enemy Within' you realise they have taken influence off bands like In Flames and Fear Factory to even Pantera to produce a sound that is unique to them. Let's call it the newly found GraVil signature sound, this sound continues throughout their set so you know from each song that it is them without even seeing them. This song and the follow up 'Beyond Reprieve' is taken from the bands last album 'Thoughts of a rising Sun', and both songs show off the band to be one that is well worth your attention. They have brutality but they also have a sense of commerciality to them that makes you want to listen to them over and over again. Singer Grant Stacey has a great scream on him too, which makes the songs stand out even more but it's not only him that makes GraVil shine. All the musicians in the band have well polished their performance of their songs and when it get's to London, they are a well oiled machine ready to destroy.

Tony Dando looks cool as he kills the riffs on 'Structurally Unsound' while Sparx lays down a steady bass line and brings up the complexity of the track. The band set is really short due to being first on the bill but they manage to get three more tracks crammed into their performance. Including a steady version of 'March of the Titans' which really shows new strings to GraVil's bow and 'Through the eyes of the Spartans' already a live favourite among the bands loyal few.

They end the set with the brilliant 'Bottle of Shadows', which shows that they are a band really worth watching in the future, I think their will be better things to come from this band and better and more classic GraVil performance in years to come, so they are a band you want to check out if you have the chance. Also buy their music and support a hard working band, because they really do deserve it.
