Chris Kamara - Here’s to Christmas

Chris scores in festive thriller

Chris Kamara is a former footballer, football coach and well known as being the face of Sky Sports football coverage on Saturdays. Perhaps best known for his catch phrase of ‘Unbelievable’ which I suspect is the reaction most people had when they heard he is releasing a Christmas album. Though it turns out he was quite for belting out a tune in the changing room during his playing days, and he really belts it out on this release.

As well as being a personal goal and triumph to release an album, 25% of all the proceeds are going to Marie Curie, a charity close to his heart having previously scaled Kilimanjaro in the past while raising money for them. But while I always like to give a bit of background ultimately our job as reviewers is to let you know our opinion as to whether it is any good, I admit to be sceptical prior to pressing play.

It is a big band based record and contains all the classic seasonal tunes you would expect from such an album opening with ‘Let it Snow’ and I was pleasantly surprised he has a good voice and sat here in December it has the festive feel you would like to have too. It also contains ‘Rudolph the red nosed Reindeer’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ amongst the first few tracks. The final few tracks are given over to the band themselves with instrumentals of ‘In the bleak Midwinter’ and ‘Silent Night’.

OK, it’s a well-worn album concept that is probably not added to and being honest there are probably people with better voices that have done it before.  But, let's be festive about this it’s good fun hearing all these classic tunes with somebody who can show another side to themselves while raising money for charity, quite a brave thing to do too in all honesty. Ultimately I enjoyed it and will be more positive when pressing play again with the roast turkey in a few weeks.
