Behemoth - Bring on the pain in London!

Thundering their way through!

There are gigs and there are events. There are shows that go down in history, it's often said that if everyone who says they saw the Sex Pistols actually did then they would have been playing arenas, well tonight is one of those times. Tonight Behemoth delivered the show they had always threatened to deliver and tonight they became the band they always had the potential to be.

The main factor of this is the size of the venue therefore the size of their stage production. The last two times Behemoth graced our shores they played under DevilDriver at the London Garage and before that they headlined the London ULU both great shows but tonight they reached their pinnacle. The stage set simple enough but looks brilliant each member has their own sculpted mic stand, Nergal's is like his own personal altar.

Instead of exploding onto the stage they build things up gradually by starting with their new anthem 'Blow your trumpet Gabriel' the set is perfectly set out. Behemoth are criticized now and then for their music being a little too potent at times but tonight everything is perfectly balanced in terms of tempo and atmosphere.

Although I've enjoyed 'The Satanist' and am fully aware of what a great record it is I've still to fully digest it and one thing that stands out for me is how separate it feels from the rest of the bands catalogue but tonight the songs fits with their previous material just fine. Behemoth at this point are today's greatest extreme band taking the brutality and technicality of Hate Eternal and Nile and mixing the complexity and atmosphere of Morbid Angel and Death while giving everything a Black Metal final coat of paint.

The groove of 'Ov Fire and the Void' is hypnotizing tonight and the band play with such passion. The show climaxes with their usual set closer 'Chant of Eschaton' with still remains the best song. The band then come back on and play through their new masterpiece 'O Satan, O Father, O Sun' and bring the night to a devastating finish. The stage lights go black for a moment and the house lights come on and the stage is empty and the crowd are brought back to reality. An amazing show I sincerely hope (preferably tonight) a show from this current tour is filmed and put out on DVD. Morbid Angel can step aside the Apprentices have outdone their masters!
