Bridging the gender barriers!!!

Anna Calvi *** is a very promising female Singer / Songwriter we have covered before on Music Trespass Magazine, so it was nice that we could get to see her live. She comes to the stage wearing bright red lipstick, and a suit that is far to big for her. But I think the suit is meant to be this way and is part of her look, and she does look striking. I think Anna Calvi recently is trying to bridge the gender barrier, and show women can Rock as much as men can. She seems like a confident and edgy figure, as she belts out the first bars of 'Desire'. She does this with a determination to impress, but sometimes I have to say I like her vocals more with a little more control. Like on her recordings, she has a little more mystic and leaves more to your imagination.

Her perfomance has multi layers, she has loads of different ideas that she wants to show you on stage. And she does not give you everything she has got straight away, leaving you wondering what is going to come next. Like her second song in her set which is a cover of the TV on the Radio song 'Wolf like Me', which seems to have immediate effect to impress. This song shows off new definitions of the sound she can producess, which seems to be very different live to on recordings. Which you can hear on her fan favourite 'Don't beat the girl out of my Boy', which is again very different on the recording. I think this track means a lot to her fans in the audience, who smile with delight.

Quite a few people in the crowd where actually dressed like her, and I think have bought their tickets just to see her performance. And this is really saying something with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Smile and Spiritualized being on the bill today. All bands that are amazing live, showing the faith her fans have in her. I have to say I'm a little disappointed with any artist that does two cover versions (TV on the Radio and Suicide) in a set that is only six songs long, it kinda shows that they are not confident with playing their own material. And by now Anna Calvi should be totally confident with her songs, because she has a good selection she can pick from.

Her set seems to go by way too quickly, and I have to say I didn't really get what I wanted to see from it. But I think that is because it was far too short, and she wasn't really given enough time to get going. I sometimes feel on festival's they load the bill with too many bands, when actually they maybe should give artists more time to play. I would like to see Anna Calvi again in a different situation, because from this performance I can't really make my mind up about her.
